If someone collapses

Three things, in this order.

    Call 911 or 112

    Do this first, before anything else. Put your phone on speaker so you can keep your hands free.

    Call 911 now

    Start chest compressions

    Push hard and fast in the centre of the chest, and keep going. The emergency operator will talk you through it — stay on the line and follow what they say.

    Send someone for the nearest AED

    If you are not alone, send someone else to fetch it so compressions never stop. Switch the AED on and it will tell you what to do out loud, step by step.

Where the pads go

Every AED shows this on the pads themselves and says it out loud. This is only a quick reminder — bare skin, press the pads down firmly, and let the machine do the rest.

Adults and children over 8 Both pads on the front: upper right chest, and the left side below the armpit.
1 2 front back
Small children under 8 One pad on the chest, one on the back, so they do not touch. Use child pads or the child setting if the AED has one.

Never delay using an AED because you are unsure. If only adult pads are available, use them on a child rather than none at all — follow the machine's spoken instructions.
